The core of the work we do at Scholarship Education Outreach is the belief that financial literacy is a crucial stepping stone to economic mobility. That’s why we introduced our Financial Aid Planning Challenge to a group of high school students participating in the BWEP leadership program at Clayton State University. Led by our Executive Director, Niakesha Hollins, this interactive learning experience served as a powerful tool to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the financial aid process confidently.
An Interactive Approach to Financial Aid Education
The Financial Aid Planning Challenge is a key initiative under our outreach through education program, designed to improve financial literacy and empower students to make informed decisions about college funding. Through this engaging and hands-on workshop, students participated in the “Build Your Financial Aid Plan” activity, where they learned:
✔ Key Financial Aid Concepts – Understanding scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs. ✔ How to Analyze Financial Aid Packages – Evaluating different types of aid and their impact on college affordability. ✔ Critical Thinking & Budgeting Skills – Comparing college costs, assessing funding options, and creating a balanced financial plan. ✔ Decision-Making Strategies – Weighing the trade-offs between student loans, work-study, and scholarships. ✔ Financial Responsibility Awareness – Gaining insights into college costs and planning ahead to minimize debt.
Impact of the Activity: Equipping Students for Success
Through this interactive experience, students gained invaluable insights into financial planning for higher education. The impact of this activity was significant:
✨ Boosts Confidence in Financial Planning – Students left feeling more empowered to apply for scholarships and navigate the financial aid process. ✨ Encourages Early Preparation – Highlights the importance of filing the FAFSA early and proactively researching funding options. ✨ Reduces Financial Stress & Anxiety – Provides clarity and control over their financial future, making college seem more attainable. ✨ Increases Awareness of Loan Debt – Helps students borrow responsibly by understanding the long-term effects of student loans. ✨ Strengthens Real-Life Application Skills – Offers a practical, hands-on experience that mirrors real-world financial planning.
Bridging Financial Literacy to Real-World Application
Beyond the workshop, students can apply these lessons in tangible ways:
✅ Taking Ownership of Their Financial Future – Actively researching scholarships, budgeting, and seeking financial aid. ✅ Applying for More Scholarships – Using newly acquired skills to identify and secure funding opportunities. ✅ Making Smarter College Choices – Selecting schools based on academic and financial fit to graduate with minimal debt. ✅ Budgeting & Financial Planning – Managing money effectively and preparing for tuition costs. ✅ Understanding Long-Term Financial Impact – Making well-informed borrowing decisions to avoid excessive debt.
Students Receive an Essential Organizational Tool
As part of our commitment to empowering students, each participant received a copy of Your Scholarship Planner®, an educational tool designed to help them develop an organized mindset. This planner serves as a valuable resource for tracking scholarship applications, managing deadlines, and staying on top of financial aid opportunities.
